Renting an apartment with a kitchen? Great. You can cook your own meals and save money. Here are some tips for finding your way around an Italian kitchen.
Refrigerators are generally small by American standards, so you'll want to plan accordingly.
You won't find measuring cups or measuring spoons. Italian cooking is done by weight, not by cups and ounces. It may take a bit of getting used to, but cooking and baking by weight is more accurate than using measuring cups. For example, the weight of a cup of flour can vary with how much moisture it has in it, but 600 grams of flour is always 600 grams of flour.
Dishwashers and microwaves are not as common in apartments in Italy as they are in the US.
Milk often comes in foil lined cartons similar to the cartons used for broth in the US. It is fine to store it on the shelf. Refrigerate after opening.
Tomato paste comes in tubes, not tin cans.
Recycling is very important. Generally, you will have to keep all your food waste separate and sort the glass and paper. Be sure to check with your host about the recycling regulations; they can vary from place to place. Some hosts can be fined for guests who do not sort their recyclables.
Enjoy! I love cooking in Italy. The ingredients are high quality and the food is delicious.
