Now that you’re learning some Italian and you have an idea
of where you’d like to go, you’re ready to start looking for flights.
Flexibility is your ticket to great deals on flights. Off season pricing can be less than half of
the cost of a peak season ticket. Off
season generally means October through April, excluding holidays. Italy is beautiful during fall, winter, and
early spring. Temperatures are moderate.
Crowds are smaller at tourist sites.
Another plus is that you can taste foods you can’t get any other time of
year. Here in the US we are used to our
foods being available year around. In
Italy food is very seasonal. Devouring a
bag of freshly roasted chestnuts purchased from a street vendor is one of my
favorite treats and only available in the fall.
Look for a midweek flight.
Flights are more expensive Mondays, Fridays, and on the weekends.
A successful search for a cheap flight can take some
time. You might find something in your
first search. More likely, you will
spend several weeks to a few months looking.
Keep a calendar nearby as you search. Mark it with all the dates that don’t
work. If you will be traveling with
someone, make sure that you have their schedule, too. Deals on flights are often available for only
a few hours or at most a few days. Keeping
a calendar like this at hand will enable you to respond quickly when a cheap
flight become available.
Remember that you don’t have to fly directly to the city you
want to visit. Rome is a major hub and
flights there are often less expensive than other cities. Once you’re on the ground, you can take a
train to your final destination.
Relax and enjoy the process. Dream a bit. It's ok if you don't immediately find a super awesome deal. Cheap flights sell out quickly and you may miss a few deals. Just keep watching. Then be ready to snatch that deal when it comes.
